At least 64 Dead in Rio's Largest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime
At least 64 people were killed in a security raid cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's history.
Four security agents were included in the fatalities during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities reported. In excess of 80 people were arrested.
Violent conflicts commenced when around 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho reacted using gunfire, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, officials said.
The United Nations human rights body said it was "appalled" by the police operation, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

The slum neighborhoods adjacent to Rio's airport is considered to be the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.
State officials confirmed no less than 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
