A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen others sustained injuries in an apparently premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house near the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three officers killed belonged to the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female got detained at the site and a third person who escaped following the blast was located shortly later. Each of them have been admitted to the hospital.

The blast could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the location showed the property left as a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the past.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto area, President Zaia, explained the property was under an eviction order due to financial obligations accumulated by the three owners.

Mediators had been sent to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the residents triggered the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief the police commander informed reporters.

A propane tank had been activated, and the blast directly hit our members,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the interior minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the incident comprised eleven more officers of the military police as well as three members of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

The official believed the blast had happened on a story above the doorway and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the incident, he said members had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas canisters being activated”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors informed Italian media, mentioning that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto joined other government officials in honoring the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
